Chapter Seven

“I'm going to regret this, aren't I?” she said later, curled naked alongside him, her leg across his thigh and her arm on his chest. The scent of their second bout of lovemaking still lingered in the air, a vivid reminder of the strength of their passion only moments ago. If anything, her orgasm had been even more intense thanks to her newly heightened senses, but there were things she found herself missing. A pounding heart. Blood rushing in her veins. Heat. She thought she might just miss the heat the most out of everything she'd given up in her choice to become a vampire. A vampire. She touched her fangs gently with one finger. Strange. A distant part of her almost hoped she was crazy or dreaming, but knew she was neither.

“Regret? Yes…” Michael paused, staring up at the ceiling, his fingers interlaced behind his head. “No.”

She laughed and stroked her hand up the hard curve of his pectoral muscle. “Are you always so unequivocal, Mr. Michael Lennox?”

“Maybe.” His mouth curled up in a slight smile.

“It seems so unreal. Like a dream I'll wake from. It's almost like…like I'm afraid to acknowledge that I've changed everything.”

He nodded. “Everything's changed, but you haven't lost it all. It's all still there, waiting for you.”

“But not in the daylight.”

“No. Not in the daylight.”

Silence fell for a while. She listened to the distant sound of sporadic traffic on the street outside.

“How did you change?” She circled one of his nipples with a finger. “What's your story?”

“I'm nothing special,” he said, and though he stayed intertwined with her, she could feel him mentally drawing away from her. She stilled her hand and then withdrew it.

“Tell me,” she said. “Please. I need to know I'm not alone in this.” She paused. “Did you make the same choice?”

“I didn't have a choice.” A faraway look came into his eyes. “Another made that choice for me a long time ago.”

“When did it happen?”

“Nineteen twenty-two. January. On a Saturday.”

“I was hoping for a little more than that.”

He stayed quiet for a moment and then sighed. “I guess I'll tell you, since you're so damn curious.” She opened her mouth to protest, but he waved a dismissive hand. “It's all right. The story's not complicated. I'd been banging around in Virginia, supposedly on business for my father but mostly left to my own devices. I gravitated to Richmond, a young man who loved music, drink, and most of all, the company of women. Nothing strange there. And I was the firstborn son of a family that made its fortune off sugarcane farms in the Caribbean a generation earlier. So I was all set for trouble, a young scion full of lust and indolence, with enough money to make him bored.”

She smiled slightly, trying to picture this other human Michael Lennox in her mind and not quite succeeding.

“There was one woman I first saw at a party,” he continued. “Not one of those flappers who were only too eager to come back to my place and share the treasure under their skirts.
